
Professor Javier Fandino was born in Cartagena, Colombia, a Swiss national living abroad. After completing his medical studies in 1992 at the Universities of Xaveriana (Colombia) and Brown (USA), he worked for a year at the Colombian League Against Epilepsy.
After completing his doctoral thesis at the University of Zurich, he continued his training as a neurosurgeon from 1991 to 1998 at the University Hospital Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Y. Yonekawa and at the University Hospital Bern under the supervision of Prof. R. Seiler.
This was followed by a two-year neurosurgery fellowship in the USA at the University of Virgina and University of Cincinnati. From 2000, he worked as a senior physician at the University Hospital Zurich, University Hospital Bern and Cantonal Hospital Aarau. In 2004 and 2005, he completed his habilitation at the Universities of Zurich and Bern in the field of cerebrovascular research. Between 2006 and 2011, he held the position of head physician and deputy head physician at the Clinic for Neurosurgery of the Cantonal Hospital Aarau.
After receiving the titular professorship at the University of Bern, Prof. Fandino was elected Chief Physician and Clinic Director of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at the Cantonal Hospital Aarau in 2012. During this time, his main areas of interest were the surgical treatment of brain tumors, brain aneurysms and spinal surgery. In the course of this time, he took over the management of the Brain Tumor Center and the Neuro-Pain Unit.
Since 2021, he has been practising at the Hirslanden hospitals in Zurich and Aarau and as part of the Neurosurgery Centre Zurich.
